The Daniels Welchester neighbor is in Jefferson County, Colorado, about 8 miles due west of downtown Denver. Part of the neighborhood was first platted in 1921.
Today, there are about 1,900 homes in the neighborhood, split between the City of Lakewood and an unincorporated part of the county. It is bordered by Colfax Ave. to the north, 6th Ave. to the south, Simms St. to the east and Indiana St. to the west. It is comprised of four smaller neighborhoods - Daniels Garden, Wide Acres, Mountain View Estates and Ashwood (aka Bruno). We're the proud home of Welchester Elementary School, one of only 21 schools in Colorado to receive the Governor’s Bright Spot award in November 2022 from Governor Jared Polis. The award recognizes schools that showed strong improvements in results despite the pandemic.
For the past 40+ years, it’s been the sole purpose of DWNA to keep our neighborhood the wonderful, rural-residential and diverse place we all love. If you haven’t heard of us, that’s okay. This is a voluntary, grassroots group, with volunteers who spend hundreds of hours each year to benefit all of us. We work without fanfare with elected officials and staff at Jeffco and Lakewood, along with developers, to make certain proposed developments are compatible with our neighborhood. The only times we reach out are when an irresponsible developer proposes building something that will do serious damage to the neighborhood…and to invite you to our annual meeting (2nd Tuesday in October) and to our amazing annual picnic the first Monday in August that draws some 250 neighbors of all ages to Daniels Park each year.
We are a neighborhood association that advocates for the community. We look for and encourage public and private projects that will enhance the safety and quality of life in our community. We keep the lines of communications open to elected and appointed local government officials as an early warning system of plans by local governments and developers that might impact the neighborhood. As issues arise, the association brings together the residents of the neighborhood to express our concerns.
Our mission is only to advocate for the neighborhood. We are NOT a homeowners' association. We do NOT have covenants or deed restrictions. We do NOT tell residents what they can and cannot do with their homes. We do NOT have assessments or provide services.
The association is a voluntary organization. All residents - homeowners and renters - who live within our borders may participate. Any money contributed to the association is voluntary and tax-deductible, and will be spent on community projects. We have a 12-member board of directors that is elected at our annual meeting. The annual meeting is held in October each year. We also have quarterly board meetings in January, April and July. All meetings are open to everyone who lives in the neighborhood.
